Summary of Position

This position is responsible to the respective Department Chair and Director of In-House Programs.  The general faculty member provides quality one-on-one 30-minute, 45-minute, and 60-minute music instruction to students ranging from elementary school age to adults. Bilingual speakers (Spanish, Mandarin, or Cantonese) are highly encouraged to apply.

Start Date:                 Classes Begin Wednesday, September 11, 2019 with a Faculty Orientation on Thursday, September 05, 2019

Schedule:                   Wednesdays, with potential for teaching on other weekdays and Saturday

Status:                        Part-Time 

Reports to:                Director of In-House Programs

Works Closely With: Director of In-House Programs, Percussion Department Chair, and Registration Staff

General Responsibilities

  • Be knowledgeable about CMCB’s mission and policies
  • Teach students according to curricular guidelines

Specific Responsibilities

Studio Management and Retention

  • Manage teaching studio and work with Registrar on resolving scheduling conflicts
  • Prepare students for evaluations and performances
  • Hold at least one studio recital during the school year (if studio size is small, combine with another faculty studio)
  • Accurately update and maintain studio attendance sheets
  • Maintain open and regular communication with parents and students to support educational progress
  • Contact students/parents if there are any unexpected absences
  • Sign students up to participate in a minimum of 1 workshop and 1 recital per semester 

Communication and Participation

  • Attend department meetings and annual all-faculty meeting as scheduled
  • Participate in departmental events, competitions, recitals, and concerts and encourage students to attend
  • Facilitate student participation in the annual Performathon fundraiser
  • Participate in annual department student evaluations
  • Communicate clearly with Front Office regarding teaching schedule changes
  • Respond to requests from CMCB staff in a timely manner
  • Communicate with Department Chair on curriculum expectations

Other Duties as assigned by Department Chair

Essential Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in music performance or education with knowledge in the field of percussion performance/pedagogy or equivalent experience
  • A minimum of 2 years teaching experience
  • Must have experience working with diverse populations of students 
  • The successful candidate will have a commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as pedagogical and professional values
  • Ability to teach both indivudal (private) lessons and group classes
  • Ability to work with Early Childhood Group Classes (Ages 4-7), in addition to individual (private) lessons with students (Ages 7+)
  • Availability on Wednesdays
  • Knowledge in a diverse range of styles preferred (i.e. Classical, Rock, Blues, Jazz, Folk, World Music, and/or Popular Music)
  • Ability to motivate and/or inspire others
  • Excellent Interpersonal Skills (engaging and professional)
  • Effectively communicate with others
  • Demonstrated ability to actively listen to and learn from others
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) – Ongoing training is provided in this area
  • Bilingual (Spanish, Mandarin, or Cantonese) skills are a plus but not required
