Title: Director of School Outreach Programs
Summary of Position
The School Outreach Program (SOP) Director at the Community Music Center of Boston will be a visionary leader responsible for supervising and directing aspects of the department’s strategic vision, public visibility, and Directorial operations as it relates to CMCB’s School Outreach programs. The position provides artistic, pedagogical, and culturally-competent curricula to the current and incoming school outreach faculty working with a diverse group of school-age learners. The SOP Director has the overall responsibility for the educational experience of a wide range of students in various school settings and neighborhoods, including curricular oversight and fit, evaluation, and performance. The SOP Director manages school communications with school principals, administrators, teachers, and parents. The position will assist and work closely with the Chief Programming Officer (CPO), particularly with regard to program accountability, oversight, and financial management.
The SOP Director manages a program assistant and all other employees in the SOP program, including teaching artists, guest artists, and coaches.
Status: Full-Time (40 hours/week)
Reports to: Chief Programming Officer (CPO)
Pay and FLSA Status: Exempt
Works Closely With: Community Engagement Manager (CEM), Director of SummerARTS/Director of Early Childhood Programs (DECH), Director of In-House Programs (DIHP), Music Therapy Director (DMT)
● Coordinate with CPO and other department heads as needed for recruitment and interviewing for SOP staff positions.
● Lead efforts to increase diversity of SOP faculty to reflect student diversity.
● Work with program heads, supervisors, and assistants to ensure that SOP hiring practices minimize implicit bias of marginalized groups.
Program Accountability and Oversight:
● Work closely with CPO to identify and promote innovative programming that challenges the status quo and pushes the organization to consider choices that may be outside its traditional comfort zone.
● Work with CPO and CEM to choose an annual instructional framework for Teaching Artists.
● Train Teaching Artists to implement age-appropriate and culturally competent curricula for each school site.
● Coordinate annual orientation and professional development training throughout the school year, in conjunction with the CEM and CPO.
● Work with CPO to arrange additional professional development workshops, opportunities, and trainings by guest teachers and coaches.
● Ensure the highest level of programs and services that meet the needs of a diverse community of learners.
● Work with CPO to manage programmatic risk, including ensuring that appropriate compliance systems are in place, and steps are taken to reduce organization risks related to finance, safety, labor relations, and other related functions.
● Work with CPO to oversee administrative systems and processes to enable efficient workflow and management across SOP.
● Conduct regularly scheduled school visits and meetings with principals, BPS teachers, and/or specialists as needed.
● Work with SO Program Assistant to facilitate and review formative evaluations from site partners and self-evaluations from SOP faculty.
● Provide school partners with budgets, fully-executed memorandums of understanding, and invoices.
● Meet SOP faculty individually twice annually for performance reviews, or as needed.
● Assist Teaching Artists and schools with scheduling annual student performances.
● Empower and build camaraderie among teaching artists to recognize and leverage individual strengths and contribute to organizational success.
● Provide mid-year and final reports annually to CPO.
● Work with CPO to define, document, and report programmatic impact.
● Direct the SO Program Assistant to maintain SO Program library of music materials, education materials, teaching supplies, and musical instruments.
● Additional tasks as assigned by the CPO or Executive Director.
Marketing and Communications:
● Coordinate with Advancement team to provide marketing information for CMCB brochure and marketing materials.
● Coordinate with Advancement team to send promotional mailings to SOP partners as needed.
● Coordinate with Advancement team to provide qualitative data for newsletters or grant reporting purposes as needed.
● Respond to written and phone inquiries about SOP.
● Coordinate with CPO to make in-person presentations at schools as needed.
● Work with CPO to ensure that SOP programs have sound financial strategy and high-quality financial systems and controls in place.
● Work with CPO to monitor and report financials to ensure the financial health and stability of each program.
● Work with CPO to financially negotiate, manage, and implement CMCB’s contractual partnership agreements.
● Provide detailed and accurate monthly payroll and reconciliation information to CPO and CMCB Operations team.
● Manage the annual program budget.
● Assist Operations team in managing billing for partners.
● Minimum Bachelor’s degree and/or extensive knowledge in the fields of music education, community arts education, program design and leadership.
● Performing arts teaching experience, preferably in a public school setting.
● Five or more years of professional experience, preferably in arts administration.
● Expertise in planning, organizational development, and team building in a collegial environment of mutual respect is needed.
● Very strong relationship-building and negotiating skills are needed.
● A successful track record in best practices within the community engagement field and a high level of leadership experience is expected.
● Strong coaching skills and an ability to develop teaching practices on an individual basis are needed.
● The successful candidate will have the ability to respond to challenges quickly, in real time, as they arise.
● The successful candidate should have a passion for arts as a tool for community engagement as well as enthusiasm for CMCB’s dual mission of excellence and access.
● MA Teaching license is a plus.
● Valid driver’s license and access to a car are a plus.

Compensation & Benefits
Salary range is mid-high $50K’s commensurate with experience, and benefits include medical insurance (group health and flexible spending account) paid time off, non-contributory 403(b) retirement plan, and discounts on music instruction at CMCB.
